Andrew Goodwin’s Theory
Andrew Goodwin's book 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory' describes opinions given towards music videos by several different people. These include the following;
- Mercer who views them as a form of cinematic content
- Fry and Fry who view them as a form of a lengthy advert
- Friske who views them as being a new form of television (classic postmodern texts)
- Walker who views them as being a form of visual art
- Lewis who only views them as being ‘shopping mall culture’
- and Marcus who views them as semiotic pornography (a watered down version of pornography which is accompanied by music – particularly in the case of R&B and Pop videos which often feature women in small amounts of clothing)
