30 Second Storyboard

Today I recorded 50 seconds of the music video in the form of a storyboard, which put into perspective how helpful storyboards really are. Although they are rather time consuming I would definitely recommend others to storyboard before they go out and film as it gives you an idea of what the real version will look like.

I filmed the video by taking photos of each different shot which was on the storyboard and then I either slowed down the picture or made it faster according to the length of the scene. Below is the finished version of the short video as well as the storyboards used to create the video.

Laura Mulvey (1975)

Laura Mulvery stated that because film makers are predominately male, the presence of women in film is often for the sole purpose of display.
The purpose of this display is to facilitate a voyeuristic response which presumes a 'male gaze' (regardless of gender of spectator). This male gaze is one that may feel like a powerful controlling gaze at the female on display.
Below is the official music video to Videophone by Beyonce ft Lady GaGa. The video is very voyeuristic and presumes the male gaze as the women are dressed very provocatively showing little to the imagination, In reality it is obvious that the video is primarily aimed at men more than women which is evident through the scantily outfits that the women are seen wearing. Also the video was produced by several males and views women in favour of them.

Below is another music video which is in favour of the 'male gaze'.

Framing and Composition

Framing is important as it draws attention to the image portrayed on the screen by blocking or overshadowing other parts of the shot. Framing and composition tends to create a sense of context and depth within the shot. Depending on the framing and composition the eyes are lead towards the main focal point due to the rule of third grid thus intriguing the viewer.

The Rule of Thirds
The rule of thirds helps a shot become more balanced and natural by placing points of interests in the different intersections of the grid. Below is a vlog explaining what the rule of thirds is...
Below is a short video I found which further explains the rule of thirds.

Above is a shot with and without the rule of thirds grid.

Eye Line Rule

The eye line rule is the idea of the actors eyes on the first horizontal line and usually in the top third section of the screen as this is where the audience focus when watching the screen, also this is the most dynamic way and common position that people are filmed in as it creates a steady and balanced shot.

Leading Lines
Lines lead the viewers eyes through a shot, This is a simple yet powerful technique which draws the viewers attention to one or more intended subjects or points of focus and they also make the shot look a lot more interesting and creative. the most effective leading lines tend to to be straught paths or roads that can be set up to show an intense composition. They can be used to lead the eye from one side to another of the shot or to create motion and greater space.

Voyeurism in Music Videos

The idea of voyeurism came from the psychoanalytical theories of Sigmund Freud. The definition was originally a perversion in which a person receives sexual gratification from witnessing others' sexual behaviour or seeing people behave in a sexual manner.
However today the media perceives the definition as the notion of looking and watching something for entertainment.

Andrew Goodwin said that women are objectified and sexualised through different camera shots and angles and through editing with fragmented body shots emphasising a sexualised treatment of a women.
Below is an example of how different editing techniques can sexualise a woman and present them as the audience as voyeurs.
Above is the official music video to Bad Romance by Lady GaGa. In many ways Lady GaGa is defying the stereotype of  women being derogative symbols in the media by wearing more clothing than her male counterparts, The idea of her not conforming to the stereotype of women being seen as sex symbols can also be represented through the notion of her refusing to swallow the liquid which is forced down her throat, however she is then seen as scantily clad which can represent her as being forced to be a promiscuous person in society. Also the fact that she is being sold and advertised is very objectifying and is giving the voyeur satisfaction. In addition the spectators gaze throughout is a symbolism of the voyeur being pleasured. The intradiegetic gaze shows that Lady GaGa is very valuable as her body is seen as a sex object.
The Gaze
This refers to how an audience views the way people are presented in the media. There are five different gazes which are continually seen in music videos, below are the definitions and examples of the different gazes...
The Spectators Gaze:
This is when an audience is seen viewing the text.

Intradiegetic Gaze...
When someone is seen viewing something.

Extradiegetic Gaze...
This is when the person in the video is seen looking at him/herself.
Above Lady GaGa is seen looking at herself in the mirror which makes it an extradiegetic gaze.

The Cameras Gaze...
The gaze of the camera, this is often equal to the directors gaze.

The music video below has various scenes which are shot using the cameras gaze...

What I've Learnt From Storyboarding

Last year when making our film, we originally planned to do a different film to the one we ended up having as our final piece. For this idea, we storyboarded each scene we were going to film and included  every shot we were going to take, to then find out we would not be using this anymore. So, for our final piece we had already had a good idea on how to storyboard and what to storyboard, therefore giving us more experience on what to do for this one. We made sure we included each shot we would use and the location we would shoot it in which helped us dramatically as when we came to film, we were not stuck on what to film or where to go when filming it and we did not get stuck and waste time.
