Finished Magazine Advert

I have finally finished my magazine advert, I decided to create two versions as one reflects the theme of nature and the rural idea of the music video whilst the other version focuses on the special effects of the photos of the artist due to the increasing technological advantages. Above are both of the magazine adverts, I haver tried to make them look as professional as possible by including all of the conventions of a magazine adverts as well as including close up shots and focusing on the artist which is associated with the pop genre.

Audience feedback Results

Below is some audience feedback I received when creating my ancillary text (magazine advert) and some feedback on the social networking site Twitter which is where my artist is most likely to communicate with her fans.

Rural Filming

Today my group and I went to film some rural scenes for the music video. We managed to get some cutaway shots of plants and birds in the sky which are very rural in comparison to the urbanisation of the cars. We also focused on the composition of the shots today and tried to film some interesting shots of the artist in the field. Below is a list of things we planned on changing and some shots we wanted to record which conform to the themes of our music video.

Green Screen Effect

Today we added a few finishing touches to the music video. We green screened the film classics so now the background is a brick wall which makes the shot look more authentic and also compares the boring technological brick wall to the iconic filmography of the 60s and 70s.

We did this by recording the posters falling in front of a green back drop. We then uploaded the footage to the imovie application on the imac and we changed the mise-en-scene using the green screen effect to an image of a brick wall which we found on the internet.

We also green screened a mid shot of the artist surrounded by several mobile phones and a telephone which highlights the importance of technology today in comparison to the lack of awareness that people had of technology in the past.
Below is the shot which we recorded when filming the rural part of the video, We chose to use this as it represents the peace and tranquility before the globalisation of technology.

Then we reduced the saturation of the shot and used the black and white effect which conforms to Saussure's theory of signified and signifiers because the black and white shot signifies the past or an old fashioned period of time.

We then layered the mid shot of the artist surrounded by technology which contrasts the two themes of the music video.

Below is what the final shot looks like with the green screen effect which we chose to include in the final video.

Film Classics

Today my group and I purchased some film classics posters and recorded them falling revealing each poster in detail one by one. We decided to include these in our music video as they are iconic symbols of the 60s and 70s and they represent the past which we are contrasting with the present.

Artist Twitter Page

I recently created a twitter profile for my artist and I have followed various artists of the same genre such as Natasha Bedingfield, Marina + The Diamonds and Florence + The Machine. My artist has also tweeted advertising her album and she has also received tweets from various fans. Below are some screenshots of her profile.

In addition, I created an email address for my artist which is Daisyandthechains1@gmail.com. This is the artist's personal account and she can also interact with her fans by answering to electronic fan mail. She also likes to email her fans about any upcoming competitions and events.

Magazine Advert Research

Generic Conventions of a Magazine Advert

There are several different features which are included in magazine adverts in order to promote them to the public and sell as many as possible, Below are some conventions which are included on all successful professional magazine adverts for solo artists mainly in the pop/ indie genre.

  • Artist image in the foreground- first thing the audience looks at.
  • Album Title
  • Album Release Date
  • Record Label Logo
  • Reviews from other industries such as a magazine and various conglomerates like magazine companies
  • Previous Successes- "Including Hit Single..."
  • Ratings from Newspapers, Magazines, Music Companies
  • Artist's Website
  • Colour Scheme- The colour scheme generally reflects the themes/ moods. A magazine advert which uses dark colours will have dark, sad songs and a magazine advert with bright, vibrant colours will typically consist of happier songs.
  • Awards Won "two time Grammy award winner"
  • Star Ratings

Analysis Of Different Magazine Adverts

Below are some female solo artist's magazine advert which I have analysed in order to help me plan my own magazine advert, I have noticed that they all follow similar conventions and I think I will stick to those conventions in order to make my own magazine advert look more realistic and confrom to the genre.

I have been analysing and studying some of the generic conventions of a magazine advert for the pop artists and albums for solo artists. Below are a few adverts which I think are similar to the genre of my own music video.

Above is the advert for the album Who You Are by Jessie J. The advert includes a detailed close up shot of the artist in the foreground which focuses all the attention on her and immediately the audience can identify the album with her and they will think of her songs. Her name is written in a bold gold font to represent her as a golden artist or an artist of high importance. Minimal writing is included which makes it easier for the audience to read over quickly and still catch the important details. The advert also advertises a popular song on the album which is a way of encouraging the audience or fans familiar with that particular song to purchase the album. Information is included about another artist, this will attract other fan bases which will boost sales and popularity of both artists. A website for the artist is included which allows the audience to access more information about her such as tour dates. The artist is dressed in black with black make up, lips, nails and hair which suggests that her songs are dark or mysterious.

There are two mid shots in this advert which advertise the two different sides to the artist which she sings about throughout her album, also the two different fonts used emphasise this. Beyonce's name is the largest writing on the advert and is it in silver and pointy writing which stands out and attracts the audience. The release date is written in roman numerals to stand out and draw attention to the date so the audience will remember it. The artist includes three of her singles on the advert which familiarises the audience with some of her music. Star ratings and quotes are not included because the artist wants to focus on her image and this way the advert is easier to read as only the most important information is included.

Above is the magazine advert for Adele's album 21. Her advert also uses generic conventions. The first thing the audience will notice when looking at this is the artist's name, an image of the artist which is a close up shot of her face as well as a small shot of the album cover and the album name. The artist will be made familiar with these and fans will be convinced to purchase the album. Previous success is included to express the quality of the artist as she has won Grammy awards.

Inspirational Video

Mumford & Sons - Lover of the Light

I recently watched the Lover of the Light music video by Mumford & Sons and I noticed that there is a large rural focus throughout the video. The opening shot is an establishing shot of a deer in a forest which instantly makes the audience think of nature. There are also many long shots of the artist focusing on the scenic shots such as the colourful sunsets in the mise- en- scene.
